Celebración de la Semana de los Libros Censurados en Second Life en la Plaza de los Libros Prohibidos en la isla de ALA . La plaza fue elaborada por la Unión AVL de estudiantes de Ciencias de la Información ( AVL LIS Student Union in SL) del programa de MLIS de la Universidad de Hawai y la Universidad Estatal de San José.
La invitada especial fue la Dra. Rebecca Knuth (Lyra Pearl en SL) con una discusión titulada “El silenciamiento Libros: “ La supresión de las ideas y de la libertad » La Dra. Rebecca Knuth es profesora de Ciencias de la Información en la Universidad de Hawaii en Manoa y ganadora del premio Sarah Vann Intellectual Freedom Award así como autora de los libros Libricide: The Regime- Sponsored Destruction of Books and Libraries in the Twentieth Century y Burning Books and Leveling Libraries: Extremist Violence and Cultural Destruction. Comparto algunas fotos y citas de su ponencia luego de describir varios incidentes recientes en los Estados Unidos.
Lyra Pearl: In conclusion, Implicit in these incidents in the U.S. in 2001 and 2003, was the rejection of the values (including individualism, multiculturalism and pluralism) that are conveyed or encapsulated in books and libraries.
Lyra Pearl: In general, bookburners simultaneously reject and challenge the status quo and prevalent modern worldviews, affirm their own belief systems, and assert themselves.
Lyra Pearl: While their actions were perceived by many as perverse, perpetrators viewed themselves as defenders of a righteous cause or value system that had been systematically denigrated and displaced.
Lyra Pearl: Extreme ideas, righteousness, and simultaneous renunciation and affirmation are the components of modern bookburning and censorship in general”
Censura ¿Quién decide, cómo y por qué?

Culture Shock es una interesantíma página que pertenece a una serie de PBS en Internet. Una de éstas se titula Who decides? How and Why?. Como dice su título provee un espacio para definir la censura desde el punto de vista del arte:
Fahrenheit 451

“Fahrenheit 451 es el título de una novela distópica publicada en 1953, cuyo autor es Ray Bradbury. El término "Fahrenheit 451" hace referencia a la temperatura a la que el papel de los libros se inflama y arde (equivale a 233º C).” (Wikipedia)
La historia fue llevada al cine en 1966 por François Truffaut. Ha habido varios intentos infructuosos de hacer una nueva versión sin que se haya materializado. Esta es una adaptación del “trailer” de la película y algunas citas de los protagonistas que nos permiten meditar sobre el poder del libro y la información.

Censura de un libro en Perú

El blog portugués Viva Biblioteca Viva publica una declaración de Alonso Estrada Cuzcano el 26 de septiembre de 2009, donde denuncia la amenaza de censura para el libro De puño y letra de Abimael Guzmán (Presidente Gonzalo). El Presidente Gonzalo es el lider de líder del movimiento Sendero Luminoso y esto ha levantado una gran polémica en Perú e incluso generó una denuncia penal al editor a través del procurador público
No tengo todos los elementos ni el conocimiento para poder hacer un juicio sobre el hecho histórico pero como bien dice Alonso Estrada no se trata de “acerca de ideologías o posiciones políticas“ sino “principios que rigen la ética del profesional de la información.”.
